Factors when choosing the carbide circular cutting blade for slitting metal material

Sep 12 , 2024

As being in producing industry cutting blades 15 years+, Top We has own experiences to share with our clients.

Today, the sharing is about "Factors when choosing the carbide circular cutting blade for slitting metal material"。

When choosing a carbide circular saw blade for cutting metal materials, it's important to consider several factors to make the correct choice.

Blade Material: Look for blades specifically designed for metal cutting, preferably made from carbide-tipped or solid carbide. These materials provide excellent durability and can withstand the high heat generated during metal cutting.

Tooth Geometry: Different blade tooth geometries are suitable for specific metal cutting applications. For general-purpose metal cutting, blades with alternate top bevel (ATB) or triple-chip grind (TCG) teeth are commonly used. ATB blades are more suitable for softer metals like aluminum, while TCG blades are ideal for cutting harder metals like steel.

Blade Diameter and RPM: Choose a blade with the appropriate diameter for your circular saw and ensure that the maximum RPM (revolutions per minute) rating of the blade matches or exceeds the RPM of your saw. Using the wrong blade size or exceeding the blade's RPM limits can lead to safety hazards and poor cutting performance.

Blade Thickness: Consider the thickness of the material you'll be cutting. Thicker blades offer more stability and reduce the risk of blade deflection. Select a blade thickness that matches the requirements of your metal cutting application.

Number of Teeth: The number of teeth on the blade affects the cutting speed and finish. In general, blades with a higher tooth count provide smoother cuts, while blades with fewer teeth are better suited for fast and aggressive cuts. Choose a tooth count based on the desired balance between cutting speed and finish quality.

Using the wrong cutting blade for metal materials can lead to a range of issues, such as:

Poor Cutting Performance: Blades not designed for metal cutting may wear out quickly, produce rough cuts, or struggle to maintain cutting speed. This can result in inefficient and inaccurate cuts.

Excessive Heat: Blades not designed for metal cutting may overheat and deform due to the high temperature generated during the cutting process. This can damage the blade and potentially cause workpiece discoloration or distortion.

Safety Hazards: Using the wrong blade may lead to increased splintering, kickback, or even blade breakage. This poses a significant safety risk to both the operator and anyone nearby.

It's crucial to select the appropriate carbide circular saw blade designed specifically for metal cutting to ensure optimal performance, safety, longevity.
